Cancer-Causing Non-Stick Pans: What You Need to Know

Liver cancer is one of the leading killers on a global scale. Over 700,000 people die from it each year, according to the American Cancer Society.

Researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles recently discovered that “forever chemicals” can increase the risk of non-viral hepatocellular carcinoma, a common liver cancer.

The study, which was published in the journal Nature Medicine, looked at data from nearly 350,000 people in the US and found that those with higher levels of PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in their blood were more likely to develop liver cancer.

PFAS are man-made chemicals that are used in a variety of products, from food packaging to non-stick cookware to water-repellent clothing. They’re also found in some industrial and manufacturing processes.

While the USC study is the first to link PFAS exposure to liver cancer, previous research has linked these chemicals to other types of cancer, as well as to fertility problems, thyroid disease, and immune system problems.

So how can you avoid exposure to PFAS?

Here are some tips:

  • Check the labels of your food and household products to see if they contain PFAS.
  • Avoid using non-stick cookware.
  • Choose water-based rather than fluorinated sunscreens.
  • If you work in an industry that uses PFAS, make sure you’re using the proper safety equipment to protect yourself.

While avoiding exposure to PFAS is important, it’s also important to remember that liver cancer is a complex disease with many different causes. If you’re concerned about your risk, talk to your doctor.
