Working up the courage to enter the gym for the first time can be incredibly daunting. To help ease nerves, it often helps to have a few sage advice from the pros in the back pocket before taking the plunge into fitness.

celebrity trainer Magnus Lygdback He doesn’t want to leave you hanging. in a new youtube videoLygdbäck shared his The best tips for beginners in the gym.providing advice on training programs, mindset and everything else.

For starters, Lygdbäck says that before you hit the gym for the first time, you should ask yourself one question: What is my motivation?

“If you’re going for the wrong reasons or have unrealistic goals to start with, there’s a very good chance you’ll get discouraged and eventually give up,” he says. “Remember: This should be a lifestyle change, not a phase.”

Lygdbäck advises beginners to try out a few gyms in their local area before buying a membership, taking advantage of trial periods to find the one that’s most comfortable for their needs. The celebrity trainer also advises beginners to start their fitness journey on their own rather than go with a friendbuilding independent responsibility and comfort.

“If you go with a responsible colleague, the risk is that when he quits, you quit,” he advises.

Before hitting the gym, Lygdbäck says it’s best to eat a food with protein, carbohydrates and good fats within a three-hour window before exercising. On their way out, Lygdbäck says for him to bring a bottle of water (obviously) and maybe some music. But he warns against hitting your jams too hard, as it can make you unaware of your surroundings and make a lot of noise hitting weights and the like.

In addition to wearing comfortable sportswear, Lygdbäck says you should also choose a good pair of shoes made for what you do in the gym.

“I shouldn’t have a pair of running shoes if I’m trying to deadlift or lift weights. And I shouldn’t have a weightlifting shoe while I’m running on the treadmill,” he says, adding that hybrid shoes are good if you plan on do a lot of different exercises.

To help you get on the right track, Lygdbäck recommends speaking with a personal trainer at the gym of your choice to develop a training program that helps you achieve your goals.

“A typical program is to work your lower body one day, one day push and pull, and then one day arms. Then, in three or four days, you work your entire body, and then start all over again,” He says.

Lygdbäck says that beginners should stick to going to the gym three days a week at first, and then build up as their schedule allows. He also advises doing the same exercises consistently to get the most out of your program and prevent injury. When it comes to reps, Lygdbäck says he prefers more reps (like 12 to 15) with a low weight to reduce movement patterns and develop muscle memory over using heavy weights with a lower rep.

“Stick to a basic program, learn the fundamentals, build a strong foundation, and build up slowly,” he says, adding that ideally you should go to the gym for 60 minutes or less.

Now, that’s a lot of good advice. But Lygdbäck’s last point is possibly his most important piece of advice.

“Don’t expect to be motivated all the time,” he says. “Motivation is overrated. Discipline and responsibility [are] what matters.”
