Recognizing the detrimental impact the pandemic has had on mental health, Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) Hairdressing Professor Rachael White decided to take action.
It approached local charity North Staffs Mind to offer users of its services free pampering and uplifting sessions in popular college shopping lounges.
Rachael, who is also a mental health advocate for the university group, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with North Staffs Mind, at NSCG we feel that wellness is at the core of everyone’s health and happiness.
“Every image you see on social media or in a magazine has the ability to change your mood and the way you feel about yourself.
“Your hairstyle and how you feel about it is one of many factors that can instantly change your mood.
“We want to raise awareness and promote understanding and empowerment for people dealing with mental health issues.
“A positive change in appearance can bring a new mental outlook on life, promote self-healing, boost confidence, and help you feel like a million bucks.
“That’s why we’re offering free styling and cutting and blow-drying services to the amazing groups of young people and adults who receive support and advice from the fantastic team at Mind.”
Following the successful launch, the university is also looking to offer pampering services to those living with and supporting people with mental health issues.
Rachael added: “Caregivers can sometimes be overlooked, however we know they do a fantastic job and we look forward to extending the current promotion to offer relaxing treatments in our Academy Beauty Therapy salon, to help them de-stress and relax too.” . .”
North Staffs Mind offers an adult counseling service at a reduced rate for adults receiving Universal Credit and free support groups held Tuesday nights between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm at the RVC Center in Hanley.
Kate Boundy, CEO of North Staffs Mind, said: “We are really excited about this positive and innovative new partnership project.
“We are constantly looking for new ways to work within our local community to raise awareness of mental health and increase the mental well-being of our members.
“The demand for services has never been greater as the pandemic continues to affect us all. People are accessing our services for the first time and people living with mental health issues are also facing additional challenges.”
