CARLSBAD, Calif. — California’s largest Crunch Fitness is closing its doors for good.
Employees of the Carlsbad gym raised awareness of the closure after they said corporate managers were slow to inform their roughly 8,000 members of the closure.
“I pretended like a business, like nothing was going on, and what I’ve been doing, and what most of my co-workers are doing, is telling people. But the problem is that we can only tell people who come to the gym,” said a gym employee who declined to be identified.
Another employee, who declined to be identified, said “people you looked up to as managers” are making the situation more centered around them.
“Say it’s just business, but it’s not business, because people come to the gym looking for a safe place,” the employee said.
Members were frustrated and heartbroken to lose their gym.
“A couple of people have said, ‘I just signed up, I just signed up. Wait, are they closing? Are you still signing people up? I hope not,’” said gym member Chantal.
“I wish they had told me so I could cancel my membership or transfer it to a different Crunch, if that’s what they wanted us to do,” said gym member CJ Clark.
Crunch’s corporate leaders refused to admit they were shutting down at first, but later confirmed that they would send a message to all members and employees on March 28. Crunch Corporate restated this statement.
“We are committed to serving the fitness needs of our SD community at Crunch’s other locations. Unfortunately, we have not been able to reach an agreement with our owners that would keep us in our current location. Our memberships and training agreements are transferable, but in the event a member requests a refund, we will follow our process, which includes the transfer option and refund, if applicable.”
