Counselling Session Focuses On Cops’ Mental Health | Kolkata News – Times of India

Kolkata: Kolkata Police organized ‘Sainik Sammelan’ at Silpara Community Hall on Monday. The event took place less than two weeks after the Park Circus shooting, where a police officer, Chodup Lepchaof the 5th Battalion, had killed one woman and wounded two others before shooting himself.
During the hour-long program, a stress management instructor, who had worked with the New York Police Department (NYPD), conducted a special session for police officers associated with Thakurpukur, james long Y diamond port traffic guards. More than 100 civic volunteers, national guardsmen, police officers, sergeants and other senior officers participated in the event.
Senior Lalbazar commanders said all units have been encouraged to carry out programs that can build confidence in the force, especially those on the road carrying weapons or handling traffic. “It is not possible to assess the mental state of a junior as only a few of us have the experience. Such initiatives are useful,” said an official.
On the show, instructor bad chowdhury, who had interacted with family members of those killed in the Park Circus shooting earlier, spoke at length about the importance of police work. She insisted that the police officers spend quality family time.
“Our policemen said that they all stayed in Kolkata and were motivated to work,” said an ACP who attended the programme. “The Park Circus incident taught us a lesson. We will have to rethink mental health in the long term. The effort to ask senior officers to talk to their subordinates is part of that exercise,” one officer said.
