Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh were in the news today for their relationship speculation. When dating rumors surfaced, the term DeepVeer was coined in her honor, but our obsession with celebrities and relationships doesn’t end with cute nicknames.
All it took was for a self-proclaimed ‘Overseas Censorship Board’ member, Umair Sandhu, to tweet something sensational about the couple and people went wild. The tweet read: “BREAKING! All is not well between #DeepikaPadukone and #RanveerSingh.”

Not only that, he followed his last tweet with another where he claimed that the actor had been depressed for the last three months. Sandhu, who was asked about her authenticity by Suhasini Maniratnam, added, “She is a successful actress and she also has a personal psychologist! Phir bhi kya tension hai Deepika ko jo khatam honay ka naam nhi le rahi (What is Deepika worried about even though she is successful and she has a personal psychologist)?”

There is so much to unpack in the problematic statement he made about Padukone. First of all, depression has many layers and there can be many reasons behind depression. You don’t need a reason to feel depressed when you have depression. Second, having a personal psychologist or therapist does not guarantee freedom from depression. Just like any other expert, a psychologist can help a person overcome and take control of their situation. And third, people should stop including a person’s mental health in every conversation about them, especially one that involves unsubstantiated rumors.

Idolatry turned into obsession
Hollywood, Bollywood, or Tollywood, our obsession with celebrities, their personal lives, and especially their relationships runs so deep that we often forget that they are just human beings with regular emotions. We start to idolize them and make them a reference for how we want our relationships to look like in real life, especially on social media.
Whether they’re together or apart, we choose sides. We may not know the whole story, but we are quick to judge. It’s been a decade since Jennifer Aniston split from her ex-husband Brad Pitt. However, social networks continue to elaborate the narrative of Jennifer Aniston vs Anjelina Jolie.
Stress is a major factor behind breakups
Similar rumors surfaced about another popular celebrity couple a few months ago when Priyanka Chopra removed Jonas from his social media handle.
People were quick to anticipate that she would soon announce the end of her marriage to Nick Jonas. As of now, the two seem to be doting on her cute daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas without any rumours.
There can be numerous reasons why a couple might break up. Even the nature of the relationship can differ from one couple to another. a study in psychology today He says that stress is one of those reasons that can cause a breakup. It not only affects the mental and physical health of the person who suffers from it, but also puts pressure on close relationships. External pressure can only increase one’s stress.

Obsession can result in anger and trolling
People were obsessed with Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. However, when Bieber married Hailey Rhode, now Hailey Bieber, she was mercilessly trolled. The trend continues even now. Gomez recently did a TikTok live and had to ask her fans to stop sending Hailey hate if they really loved her because she believes in her goodness.
The idolatry of a person or a couple can make people hate any other being that seems to be ‘against them’. We come ready to cut throats and cross all reasonable and logical boundaries when we become fanatics.

Obsession creates pressure and alters mental health
Currently, we all idolize Ryan Reynolds for being the perfect husband for Blake Lively and father of her three children. We give these men the title ‘feminists’ just because they are being loving husbands or fathers. It is his family, he must be a loving husband and father. That’s the bare minimum, yet we think highly of him just based on this public persona aspect of him, even if we don’t know him personally.

We often forget that putting celebrities on a pedestal can also put pressure on them. Many couples may have a hard time keeping the relationship intact, but our expectations of them can make it difficult for them. They might be falling apart inside, but they have to keep a smiling face for pictures. Can our obsession result in the destruction of someone’s peace of mind and sanity? It is a question worth reflecting on.
