Was. For this, we reconstructed the thumb using the second toe from the patient’s right foot and grafted it where the old thumb used to be. What is microsurgery?

For your information, let us tell you that microsurgery was started in 1981 in the Department of Plastic Surgery. Since then, surgeons have reattached body parts severed due to factory, agricultural, domestic and road accidents. Dr. Mangal says, “We have performed surgeries on more than 500 people for different body parts like fingers, toes, penis, skull, ears, upper limbs etc. We want to stress the importance of bringing the disassembled parts. Patients and relatives should always try to locate the amputated part at the site of trauma.

According to the doctor, this surgery is possible only when you bring the patient to the hospital on time, it is very important to bring the cut parts of the patient where the surgery will be done. Because during surgery the cut part has to be washed and cleaned. Then it has to be put in a clean polythene bag. After tightening this first bag, it has to be transferred to another polythene bag filled with ice. Extreme care needs to be taken so that the cut part does not come in contact with the ice. Then the patient needs to be shifted with polythene bag to a big hospital where microsurgical plastic surgery machines are available. We had two patients in the same week.

Dr. Mangal says, ‘Before this surgery, a 10-year-old child had suffered a serious injury. Which was brought to the emergency ward. In which the middle finger of the right hand was badly crushed at the distal level. When we asked the boy’s family how it happened, they told that the child got hurt while using the wood cutting machine. The condition of the finger was very bad and the patient was a child. In such a situation, it was very important to link the surgery with the child’s blood circulation. For this supermicrosurgery and very fine things were required. Along with this, a case of a 20-year-old boy from Noida came to the fore. In which the index finger of the patient was reattached after 6 hours of surgery.
