They can be delicious, but sugary drinks like sodas and fruit cocktails have the power to really screw up your weight loss goals.

“Over time, excessive intake of added sugars can contribute to chronic inflammation and sugary drinks They have almost no nutritional value, which means they really only provide you with sugar and calories,” says Amy Goodson, MS, DR, CSSD, LD author of The Sports Nutrition Playbook.

Courtney D’Angelo, MS, RDauthor in what a wellness, warns that along with plain alcohol, drinking mixed drinks can also contribute to visceral fat. “Sugar mixed drinks it can have a greater effect on your waist circumference, causing more fat to be stored in that area, so try to cut back and limit yourself to a reasonable number of drinks per week, or cut it out of your routine altogether.”

Manaker suggests that if you still want something fun to drink at night, try choosing a non-alcoholic cocktail instead. “Limiting alcohol and drinking non-alcoholic cocktails can help you avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, helping you lose that belly fat.”

“Add a Protein shake or shake into your diet so you get the recommended amount of protein per day,” says D’Angelo, “and if you want to get creative, you can add high-antioxidant fruits and other ingredients that help with belly fat as well.”
