Everyone has a morning routine that they follow once the alarm goes off. Although it’s different for everyone, some people like to brush their teeth first, while others need a little coffee before they can really function; changing one thing during my mornings has seriously changed my entire day. Why is water an A+ morning drink?
As a registered dietitian Amy Shapiro, MS, RD of royal nutrition and member of the Eat this, not that! board of medical experts previously, water is actually the best thing to drink in the morning before anything else (including that cup of coffee) because of our sleep. “We get dehydrated overnight while breathing and sweating for 8+ hours. So rehydration is very important and starting first thing in the morning allows for improved energy and focus.” she said.
Much of our body is made up of water, so it makes perfect sense that staying hydrated is the main key to feeling great. That’s why experts recommend drinking about eight cups a day. I could sit here and list the benefits of getting this much water in your system per day for prayers and prayers, but some of the biggest ones include better blood pressure, better exercise performance, and reduced risk of kidney stones. And it can all start with a few cups right away when you wake up.
How do I feel now?
In January I started wondering what small changes I could make to my day to make it better, and I realized what better way to do that than to start every day right away. I started to prepare a designated cup of water every night before I went to sleep. Then when I woke up, the 28-36 ounces of filtered water (which is equivalent to about three cups) were waiting for me. It’s like taking out your workout clothes the night before: with the mug full and ready to go, I found it a breeze to grab it and sip on my way out of bed in a daze.
One of the most immediate changes I noticed when I started drinking 2-3 glasses of water every morning was that I had to go to the bathroom earlier every day. Then my digestion began to regulate. Then I found myself more willing to keep drinking water throughout the day. Now, three months later, my skin is soft and feels hydrated, and I notice that I can concentrate better during long evenings. This habit is so ingrained in me now that even if I’m not sleeping at home, I still make sure a class of water is ready and waiting for me, even if it’s in a water bottle.
