E-Manas can be implemented across India to streamline mental healthcare: Karnataka health minister

Addressing the 14th Conference of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW), the main advisory body of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) at Kevadia in Gujarat, Karnataka Minister of Health Dr K Sudhakar said that Karnataka E-Manas can be implemented across the country to optimize mental health care.

As part of a session at the conference, health ministers shared best practices in their respective states. Sudhakar said that Karnataka has developed a comprehensive and innovative software platform for mental health called E-Manas, which was launched in June 2020. “Modern lifestyle is leading people to become victims of mental illness and the Karnataka government and its health department have developed many programs. to combat this. E-Manas is a statewide Internet-based registry of mental health professionals, facilities, and patients. It is a single destination for all mental health activities and stored data is secure. E-Manas is mobile-friendly software that is easy to use and could be deployed across the country to optimize mental health care,” he said.

E-Manas was developed by NIMHANS and the International Institute of Information Technology, Bengaluru (IIITB).

The conference has been dubbed as ‘Swasthya Chintan Shivir’.

Sudhakar told Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya that Karnataka will integrate E-Manas with other platforms currently in use, including Ayushman Bharat-Arogya Karnataka, Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Directories and the E-Hospital framework of the NIC. National Informatics).

Speaking about the Manochaitanya clinics that were started during the pandemic, Sudhakar said: “When the pandemic started, the government saw fear, apprehension and stigma among COVID-19 patients that even led some patients to take their own lives. With the Manochaitanya clinic, mental health professionals would go from house to house and counsel COVID-19 patients. In addition to this, 27 lakh COVID-19 patients received telephone counseling with the help of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). Mental health should be given the same importance as physical health.”

He said the Karnataka health department is working with NIMHANS to train primary care doctors to treat mental health conditions.

Sudhakar said that Karnataka has come up with a vision for health document prepared by around 500 professionals from various disciplines to provide a holistic and comprehensive approach to health care. The document is based on the principle of 5 Is’: intervention, integration, implementation, innovation and investment.
