Eating junk food may impair memory, increase stroke risk – Research


Side effects of junk food : A warning has come for those who consume junk food and ultra-processed foods such as pizza, hamburgers, French fries, packaged chips, red meat, bacon, hot dogs and sausages. The memory of these people can be seriously affected. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital found in a study that even small amounts of ultra-processed foods increase the risk of memory loss and stroke.

Recently, a research was also presented at the international conference of the Alzheimer’s Association in America. This research, which lasted 43 years, revealed that people who consume excessive amounts of ultra-processed foods are at serious risk of dementia. In which memory and thinking ability are seriously affected.

What does the Massachusetts General Hospital report say?

This research, published in Neurology under the direction of Dr. W. Taylor Kimberly, found that side effects of ultra-processed foods have been reported. Previous research had found that junk food was responsible for obesity, heart disease and diabetes. However, in the new study, it was linked to memory.

Junk food affects mental health

Dr Kimberly said her research found that junk food, or ultra-processed foods, seriously affects the brain. However, more research is still needed on this. The research did not prove a link between eating ultra-processed foods and the risk of cognitive decline or stroke, but it does highlight the importance of a healthy diet for brain health as we age.

What was found in the research

In this research, the risk of stroke increased by up to 8 percent due to excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods. The study also found that the less such things are consumed, the risk of damage to thinking ability can be reduced by 12 percent and the risk of stroke can be reduced by 9 percent.

What are ultra-processed foods?

Things that have been over-processed. Those that contain additives to enhance taste are called ultra-processed foods. They are low in fiber, vitamins, protein and minerals and loaded with sugar, sodium and saturated fats. Things like chips, soda, energy drinks, bacon, sausages, chicken nuggets, instant soup mix, ketchup are included.
