Every 2 minutes a woman dies during pregnancy and delivery: UN report


All women have to face different types of physical problems during pregnancy. The biggest problem is serious bleeding during delivery, due to which many women die. In a report released on Thursday by United Nations agencies, it has been revealed that every two minutes a woman dies during pregnancy or delivery. According to the report titled ‘Trends in Maternal Mortality’, 2,87,000 women died due to complications related to pregnancy and delivery worldwide in the year 2020.

This report states that the causes of death of women include- serious bleeding, high blood pressure, pregnancy-related infections, unsafe abortion as well as HIV, AIDS and malaria etc. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), said in a statement that pregnancy should be a positive experience for all women. Although even today it is a dangerous experience for millions of women around the world. The largest number of these women are those who do not have proper access to health facilities or even if they have access, they do not get high quality treatment.

Ensuring access to health facilities is necessary

He told that the statistics show that every woman and girl should get necessary health facilities during and after giving birth to a child. Community-centred primary healthcare can meet the needs of women, children and adolescent girls. In addition, they can also enable children to access essential health services, such as vaccination, nutrition and family planning, before or after childbirth.

COVID-19 increases difficulties

UNFPA Executive Director Natalia Kanm said that it is true that so many women are dying due to various problems during pregnancy and delivery. There have been more than 2,80,000 deaths in a single year. The Kovid-19 epidemic has also increased some problems and complications. Many women got corona infection during pregnancy. The report suggested that all countries should meet the global target to control maternal deaths.
