Eye Care Tips: It’s the summer season and our sunglasses are everywhere. If you’re someone who isn’t too keen on wearing these, here’s why it’s necessary this season.
Eye Care Tips: The summer season is upon us and people are already flaunting their shades, aviators and summer trends. While sporting sunglasses may look cool, it’s also a necessary eye precaution during this weather. It is during the summers when our eyes are most at risk from harmful UV rays and tend to get dry. We also indulge in a lot of fun activities during our summer vacations, therefore we need to take proper care of our eyes while having fun.
In line with summer eye care, Mr. Ajay Mishra, Optometrist at GKB Opticals, said, “While the summer season is all about enjoying fun activities and vacations, people often miss out on problems common to our eyes, particularly during this season. Although people talk about sunburn, they mostly associate it with the skin and tend to overlook corneal burns.
Did you know about sunburned eyes?
A large portion of the population is still unaware of something called “sunburned eyes,” which occurs primarily when our eyes are overexposed to heat, sunlight, and harmful ultraviolet rays. Due to the dry and muggy weather outside, the tear film in our eyes evaporates and the surface of the eye becomes dry. The use of eye drops is often prescribed to lubricate the eyes and keep them hydrated during summers, but before using over the counter drops, it is strictly recommended to consult with your ophthalmologist.
Eye Care Tips for Summers
1. Wear sunglasses with absolute UV protection – Although it is recommended to wear sunglasses every time we go outdoors during the day, the practice becomes mandatory during summers. In addition, we must ensure that the glares provide complete protection against ultraviolet rays. Sunglasses that cover the areas around our eyes are even better, as the delicate skin around our eyes often tends to be the first to be affected by the sun’s damaging rays. Ultraviolet rays can pass through clouds, so we must ensure that cloudy days do not fool us. The good news for all eyeglass wearers is that stylish sunglasses are now also available with customizable power, so it is recommended that you have your eyes checked by a qualified optometrist before settling on a pair of stylish sunglasses. .
2. Keep your body hydrated and your eyes moist – The hot and humid winds of summer tend to cause a restless sensation in our eyes leading to a condition often referred to as “dry eyes”. The tear film on our eyes tends to evaporate during the summer, which in turn dries out the surface of our eyes. Artificial tears help to overcome the situation and provide moisture to our eyes. In order to produce a sufficient volume of artificial tears, we must ensure that we are adequately hydrated.
3. Protect your eyes from photokeratitis – Just like our skin, our eyes also get sunburned and the condition is called “Photokeratitis”. With symptoms like headache, pain, swollen eyelids, blurred vision, etc., photokeratitis is caused by extensive exposure of our eyes to UV rays. While sunglasses with maximum UV protection are recommended to prevent photokeratitis, to ensure another line of defense against harmful UV rays, wraparound sunglasses are recommended. In addition to sunglasses, there are also contact lenses, which protect our eyes from ultraviolet radiation by absorbing it. The idea is to create enough barriers to prevent harmful radiation from affecting our eyes.
4. Make sure to wear your goggles while swimming. – Summer is the time when we indulge in water activities and swimming tops the list. Bodies of water are often contaminated with bacteria and fungi and by putting on our goggles we make sure we don’t expose our eyes to contaminated water. Even swimming pools are at risk of exposing our eyes to chlorinated water. Swimming with contact lenses can also infect the eyes, as there is a high chance of bacteria getting onto the surface of the lenses. Therefore, it is always recommended to wear goggles while swimming.
