apples are available throughout the year. According to an old adage, consuming this juicy fruit every day is also known to keep the doctor away. Known for their flavor and nutrition, apples are available in two types: red and green. While you may like to eat both, have you ever wondered which is healthier? Here’s a roundup from dietitian Shikha Kumari.
“Green apples have a tart flavor and a thick skin, which makes them crunchier. Red apples, on the other hand, are sweet, juicy, and have a thin skin. Due to its sweetness, people prefer red apples to green ones,” Kumari wrote in an Instagram post.
Is there a difference in their nutritional content?
There are small differences in the nutritional content between the two types of apples. Green apple it’s a better source of vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamin K compared to its counterpart, and it also contains more iron, potassium, and protein. According to some studies, green apples may be better for people trying to lose pounds, Kumari noted.
“If you are trying to reduce your total sugar intake, then it is best to switch to green apples. Red apples, on the other hand, contain more antioxidants and are more delicious,” Kumari added.
So is the green apple healthier than the red apple?
“Essentially, the green apple is equal to or more beneficial than the red apple. As mentioned above, red apples are more of a household staple, therefore you are more likely to consume them. Therefore, in the long run, both the greens and the Red apples it will have the same effect on the body even though green apples have a slightly better nutritional profile,” Kumari shared.
Commenting on the nutritional profile, nutritionist and food coach Anupama Menon said that since there are only minor differences in nutrition, there aren’t many nutritional benefits of green apples that red apples can’t replicate. “There are only health benefits related to vitamin A, since green apples contain about twice as much vitamin A as red apples. As a result, green apples would be a more potent source to stimulate vision, increasing immunityreducing the risk of acne and promoting bone health,” mentioned Menon.
However, he added that since one consumes a wide variety of fruits“Any small advantage that one apple variety might have over another is negated when the larger goal of nutritional adequacy is considered in the larger scheme of things.”
