I’m not proud of it, but I’ve started and stopped more exercise regimens than I can count.
The gym just isn’t my jam. I’m not really looking forward to going, and I always look forward to the end of any workout I do the literal second I start.
Walking, however, walking is… appetizing.
Last spring, I challenged my happily sedentary self to do 30 minutes of exercise for 40 days. Walking was my choice 85 percent of the time, with the occasional platoon session mixed (another activity I hate).
Surprisingly, I found my daily walks to be downright enjoyable and decided to make them an ongoing routine.
Another related personal revelation from last year was when I discovered I loved walking through the countryside with a push cart.. As a former golf player who only traveled by car, I was surprised how easy it was and how good it felt to stride through the streets.
In short: walking is amazing, and walking while golfing is twice as amazing. According to the Mayo ClinicThe benefits of walking are many: it can prevent or control conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure, strengthen bones, muscles, and the immune system, and reduce stress and tension.
As a physical activity, walking 18 holes of golf also burns a lot of calories. According to a study cited by The New York Times in 2010, walking while carrying or using a pushcart burns a whopping 1,400 calories in 18 holes. That’s it approximate equivalent two hours of swimming or pedaling on a stationary bike.
The number of calories you burn depends on a few factors, including your weight and the field you’re playing on. Some courses feature a five-mile loop, while others top out at seven or eight miles from the tips. Flat walking versus incline walking also has a significant impact, so a hilly hike will give you even more calories.
A general rule of thumb: walking a mile will burn about 100 calories for most people. The bottom line? There is no downside to walking when it comes to your overall health. Just try to avoid drinking too many beers and hot dogs in turn
