Key points

  • High cholesterol, or high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, refers to a state in which excess bad cholesterol builds up in the body.

  • Cholesterol or lipids is a waxy substance found in the blood that supports the formation of healthy cells.

  • Nutrition is known to be one of the key modifiable factors responsible for heart disease, weight gain or diabetes risk.

New Delhi: High cholesterol, or high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, refers to a state in which excess bad cholesterol builds up in the body as a result of eating too many saturated fats, refined sugars, and processed foods. Cholesterol or lipids is a waxy substance found in the blood that supports the formation of healthy cells.

On the one hand, experts recommend statins or anticoagulant drugs to patients with high cholesterol; they are now strong advocates of following the dietary approach to treating high LDL. And now, researchers have named a particular snack that can quickly and significantly lower high cholesterol levels. According to a groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Nutrition, a nutritional approach to lowering the LDL score was found to be as effective as medication.

Can Diet Help Lower High Cholesterol Levels?

Led by a Mayo Clinic team, this research involved participants who ate whole-food-based snacks, such as strawberry-banana smoothies or chocolate bars. These snacks were made with ingredients like walnuts that are known for their ability to lower cholesterol. For this, a diet plan was created to provide a variety of essential nutrients such as antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, and plant sterols, a compound that treats high cholesterol by preventing the body from absorbing fat molecules.

Some of the best sources of plant sterols include:

  1. Walnuts
  2. Cereals
  3. Seeds
  4. Vegetable oils
  5. vegetables

Studies have established that this plant-based compound is one of the most effective treatments for high cholesterol. For this study, participants were asked to consume these snacks in exchange for food they were already eating. Doing so, according to experts, resulted in lower cholesterol levels. Within 30 days, the participants reported an average nine percent decrease in cholesterol levels; some patients even reported a 30 percent decrease in lipids.

Nutrition and its abilities to lower cholesterol.

Nutrition is known to be one of the key modifiable factors responsible for heart disease, weight gain or diabetes risk. Therefore, the first step in its management is to make changes in the diet. Cholesterol can also be affected by making changes to the way you eat, including healthy fats in your diet along with rich sources of protein and fiber.

Studies say that combing through nuts, soy, oats, and plant sterols can work well for this purpose. Oatmeal prevents blood lipids from being absorbed in the intestine. Soybeans also inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
