Beijing: A clip-on device on the ear can treat chronic indigestion by stimulating nerves with mild bursts of electricity and cutting symptoms by up to 30 percent, according to a study. According to the Daily Mail, the clip-on gadget targets the ‘vagus nerve’, the body’s longest cranial nerve, which oversees critical bodily functions including mood, immune response, digestion and heart rate. The procedure involves implanting a matchbox-sized generator into the chest while wiring it to the nerve where it travels from the chest to the neck. The patient can activate the generator by shaking a hand-held device over it. “The device was used to treat 36 patients with functional dyspepsia, a chronic form of indigestion that affects 10 to 30 percent of adults at some point in their lives,” said a scientist at Nanjing Medical University in China. Symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, excessive belching or nausea after eating, and an early feeling of fullness after eating. The scientists attached an electrode to each ear fold, above the ear canal, and a mild current was passed through the nerve for two seconds at a time, except for three seconds with each session lasting 30 minutes, the researchers revealed.
Afterwards, food digestion and anxiety improved by up to 30 percent, easing symptoms of fullness, gas and nausea, they added.
Furthermore, the passage of processed food through the digestive system was improved and the volunteers also reported an increase in appetite while their depression scores were halved.
