A study at the New University of Otago in Christchurch, New Zealand, has for the first time identified how much extra vitamin C humans need to maximize their immune health, compared to their body weight. The study, published in the International Journal of Nutrients, found that for every 10 kg of extra weight a person needs, their body needs an additional 10 mg of vitamin C daily, which will help improve their immune health. “Previous studies have already linked high body weight to low levels of vitamin C,” said Anitra Kare, an associate professor and lead author of the university’s Department of Pathology and Biomedical Sciences. “But to help maximize their health, this is the first study to estimate how much extra vitamin C people really need, compared to their body weight,” she added. ‘Heavy people need more vitamin C’
Carey suggested that the findings could help heavy people better protect themselves from such diseases as obesity is a known risk factor for covid. Obesity can also increase the risk of serious illness due to infection. So the results of this study suggest that increasing your vitamin C intake may be the right response if you are overweight, Carey said.
How much vitamin C is there by weight?
The study determined that a person weighing 90 kg would need to take an additional 30 mg of vitamin C to achieve the optimal target of 140 mg / day; While a person weighing 120 kg will need at least 40 mg of vitamin C daily to achieve the optimal 150mg / day.
How to achieve maximum daily intake?
“The easiest way to increase your daily intake of vitamin C is to increase your intake of vitamin C-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, or to take vitamin C supplements,” Carey said.
