Entrepreneurial students are paving the way toward building a student mental health community.

Hyderabad: Home confinement and decreased levels of interaction have affected the mental well-being of most students, especially adolescents. This was also the case for Anshu Reddy Gondi and Shivani Tripurani, two teenagers from Hyderabad. However, they turned their problem into a business idea and Serapy was born.

With the goal of addressing the mental health issues of their peers and fueling their dreams of entrepreneurship, the two girls started Serapy – Student Therapy. The platform offers different programs and modules for teens to become aware of mental and emotional health and also seek professional help when needed.

“During the pandemic, we realized the importance of mental health. We not only make students (from public and private schools) aware of mental well-being, but also provide a safe platform to share their feelings,” says Anshu Reddy Gondi and Shivani Tripurani, 11th graders at Chirec School.

The platform has three programs namely Buddy Programme, Mentor Program and Anonymous Programme.

In the Buddy Programme, the platform connects two strangers of the same age and with similar interests to give them the opportunity to become friends and gain emotional support by trusting each other. In the Mentoring Program, a trained volunteer will be paired with a student to offer support and advice while staying in touch through a fixed number of sessions.

The Anonymous Program, according to Anshu and Shivani, is a more advanced program in which students want to keep their identity anonymous and, at the same time, want to get emotional support.

Sessions are held via Zoom and we break into breakout rooms for privacy and we also encourage you to call a volunteer if you think you need help. “Through social media posts, Zoom calls, and government school sessions, we make sure to constantly raise awareness about mindfulness, physical activities, concentration techniques, and more,” the students say.

The non-profit has investors but secured a position as one of the five winning startups in the Clever Harvey Winter Incubator Program and received a seed grant of Rs 25,000.
