Hyderabad Woman Suffers Stroke While Getting Head Wash At Salon. This SYNDROME Is The ‘Culprit’



Hyderabad: A simple hair wash at a salon in Hyderabad led to a stroke that turned fatal for a nearly 50-year-old woman. Doctors treating her said she had suffered a stroke while washing her head after a key vessel supplying blood to the brain was compressed. Doctors have given it a name – Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome.

A 50-year-old woman experienced dizziness and nausea with imbalance in her body. Doctors treating her said that while these strokes are often caused by a pre-existing risk or abnormality – in the latest case the woman’s spinal artery was thinner than normal, slowing blood flow to the brain.

What is Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome?

Dr Kaustubh Mahajan says, “First we have to understand what happens in a stroke. One part of the brain doesn’t get oxygen and therefore, the part of the body under the control of that part of the brain doesn’t get oxygen and gets damaged.” When there is hyperextension of the neck—which happens when our head is tilted back to wash hair—the brain is deprived of oxygen. Part of the circulation is altered. “In affected individuals—the narrowed arteries in the neck that deliver oxygen to the back of the brain—there are warning signs such as dizziness, disequilibrium, blurred vision after neck hyperextension (which happens after something like washing your head. The parlor where you have your (extend the neck backwards). If this happens, one should see a doctor, preferably a neurologist.”
