Lucknow: Making an excellent mark, IIT-Kanpur topped the NIRF Rankings 2023 in the ‘Innovation‘ category.
With 109 IPRs (Intellectual Property Rights) registered in 2022 and 950 IPRs overall filed to date, along with 130 technologies licensed to industry partners, the institute has a remarkable translation rate of 13.68%.
IIT-K’s innovative work in innovation includes licensing a pioneering technology to Trusted Life Sciences Private Ltd. which has the potential to revolutionize the field of gene therapy, especially for many genetic eye diseases. There are many inherited disorders that are caused by a faulty gene. ‘gene therapy‘ is a way of replacing the faulty gene with a working version of the gene to treat such disorders. This is the first time that a gene therapy related technology has been developed and transferred from an academic institution to a company in India. gene therapy technology IIT Kanpur will be further developed as an indigenous product by Trusted Life Sciences. The institute also developed a nanohydroxyapatite-based porous polymer composite, aiming to overcome problems related to bone and joint disorders, and capable of biocompatible bone regeneration. This innovation has been licensed to a healthcare company called Ortho Regenics Pvt Ltd.
