A report released yesterday by the Cancer Control Agency noted that nutrition is one of the factors that could help prevent cancer.

However, Dr. Rana Peniamina, a researcher at the University of Otago, said giving patients nutrition advice could also help those who have already been diagnosed with or treated for cancer.

“They really need to really take a hard look at how they can standardize nutrition information and support in that system so that it’s available to all cancer patients, at least at some level,” he said.

She says that nutrition played a role in recovery and in preventing cancer recurrence.

“Being well nourished is important for recovery and coping with treatment,” he said. “It’s also an important factor once you’ve finished your treatment and want to take care of your health for the rest of your life and prevent future cancer recurrence.”
