India’s Online National Medical Register for Enhanced Healthcare

To improve the digital healthcare ecosystem, the government launched the National Medical Record (NMR) () portal, which provides a comprehensive and dynamic database of all registered allopathic physicians (MBBS) in the country. Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda inaugurated the NMR Portal of the National Medical Commission (NMC), in the presence of Union Ministers of State (MoS) Anupriya Patel and Prataprao Jadhav (in virtual mode), in the national capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision is to make India digitally sound and that can happen if the healthcare ecosystem is also ‘digitally sound’.

RMN: A secure and comprehensive medical database

The National Health Register is linked with the Aadhaar ID of doctors, ensuring the authenticity of the individual. “The National Health Register is a much-awaited step in this direction that will strengthen the digital healthcare ecosystem and ensure quality healthcare for people,” the minister said. The online register will be upgraded and expanded with continuous improvements in the registration process on the portal.

Minister Nadda highlighted the role of state medical councils and stated that they are key players in developing and maintaining the National Medical Register and facilitating the registration process. He urged the state medical councils to “actively participate and expedite the registration process” as their “authentication efforts and speed of authentication will be a key factor in the success of the National Medical Register.”

“We are also moving in the direction of launching a similar register for paramedics and other healthcare professionals,” the minister said. According to Patel, the NMR is important because it is crucial to have authentic data on doctors across the country.

“So far, data on doctors is scattered and needs to be reviewed and updated, and the NMR portal will ensure that. The simple registration process will ensure that authentic data is maintained,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of NMR, Jadhav said that the NMR portal will ensure dynamic, authentic and consolidated data on doctors in the country.

This will lead to transparency and quality of medical professionals and ensure people’s trust in the healthcare system as they will receive verified information in a transparent manner, Jadhav added.
