Terracotta toys from Gujarat, Kondapalli and Etikoppa toys from Andhra Pradesh, Channapatna toys from Karnataka, and bamboo toys from Tripura. This is not the exhibit listing for any exhibit, but rather an innovative method being implemented by the government to promote indigenous learning toys to very young children.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development compiled a national state repository of indigenous toys and shared it with all states and Union Territories as part of its special month-long nutrition campaign.

The Ministry is using these local, indigenous and DIY toys at anganwadi centers to raise awareness and educate children and their families on healthy living and good nutritional practices, a senior official said on Thursday.

States have also been instructed to share and exchange their local play materials, folk stories and indigenous toys with each other. In fact, the Ministry has paired the States to ensure diversity, for example: Andhra Pradesh with Punjab and Arunachal Pradesh with Madhya Pradesh.

the Poshan Mah (Nutrition Month) is celebrated every year to address malnutrition in the country through mass awareness programs. This year it began on September 1 and the focus has been to activate the village councils for nutritional awareness. Therefore, all activities are focused at the village level.

Bacha aur Shiksha (Childhood and Education) and Poshan bhi, Padhai bhi (Nutrition and Education together) is one of the key themes this year.

As part of this initiative, all Anganwadi centers have been asked to organize community events to promote toy- and game-based learning and raise awareness among caregivers and parents about the use of indigenous toys in the home.

The Ministry has also led the organization of state-level indigenous toy fairs and toy-making workshops in Anganwadi centers during the month-long nutrition campaign.

Great efforts are being made to focus on the utilization of traditional foods in tribal areas for healthy mothers and children. Amma ki Rasoi or Grandma’s kitchen of traditional nutritious recipes.

Special attention is also paid to the importance of rainwater conservation among women in the anganwadi centers.
