Mental health and India
The notion of mental health is showing impeccable growth in our societies mainly due to public and digital engagement during the pandemic. International Self-Care Day is joyfully commemorated every year on July 24. The biggest energy of the day is encouraging a healthy lifestyle, rehearsing self-care practices, and facilitating forums for those who wish to seek help from around the world.
Self-care and its relevance
self care and comfort zones go hand in hand. The routine gives you mental security that reduces anxiety and stress. Unfortunately, according to a recent quantitative study by Statista, around 14% of Indians suffer from variations of mental health disorders in the country. The inclusion of self-care practices in our daily lives can help reduce it by half.
Dr. Jini K Gopinath, Director of Psychology, YourDOST shares five ways of gold that we have listed for you to practice self-care in the most efficient way.
- Maneuvers through the basics:Mental Wellness a reality begins when we proactively acknowledge how we feel. After that, it’s all about adopting some old school healthy habits into our lives. These can include activities like getting up early in the morning, running, drinking plenty of water, etc. Staying in touch with your body and meeting its healthiest needs brings you closer to a healthy body and a happy mind.
- Take advantage of your fear: It is normal to express fear in conflict situations. It can range from a presentation at work, a kickoff meeting, or even showing off your creativity to your colleagues. This will de-stress you and guide your senses so that you feel calm and collected. Reflecting on how you think and recording these emotions in your journal are some mechanisms to consider.
- Identify your ‘we’ circle: Comfort spaces arise when you are surrounded by people who respect you, listen to you and sympathize with you. While this may take a few years for us to get there, the initial stretch is starting somewhere.
- Establish a balance in life: Whatever situation you find yourself in, make the most of it and avoid feelings of being overwhelmed.
- The I>We mantra: Always take time for yourself. Here’s a validated 4-2-1 self-care routine you can follow:
- Four times a week for 15-20 minutes
- Once a month for 2-4 hours
- Twice a month for 1-2 hours
The adoption of self-care practices empowers individuals and communities to effectively contribute to their health and wellness to ensure holistic wellness.
