Following their victorious campaign at the 2022 edition of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, things have not been the same for the Australian women’s team. Her captain, Meg Lanning, spoke about how she wanted to prioritize her mental health and opted for an indefinite break from the game. This was followed by the retirement of Rachael Haynes, which certainly surprised many fans and experts of the game. It seems that these decisions could also have had an impact on goalkeeping hitter Alyssa Healy.

In a very candid way, Healy revealed how Meg Lanning’s indefinite layoff and Rachael Haynes’ retirement has made her speculate about her future in cricket after playing for so many years at the highest level. Recent developments in the Australian women’s cricket team point towards a transition phase. With a new manager in Shelley Nitschke, it seems highly likely that the Aussies will have a new captain in place who will spearhead this new stage.

The current Australian women’s team have conquered every challenge thrown at them with the trio of Healy, Lanning and Haynes as the lead architect. It is a very strange situation when it comes to the management of the Australian women’s team. Healy was being touted as one of the possible candidates to don the captain’s hat, but after her recent revelations, things for the team management have become more complicated.

Alyssa further said:

Meg taking a break and Rach retreating hit me like a ton of bricks. The beauty is that I still love the game and love being involved right now. I’m going to keep connecting and doing what I’m doing and keep enjoying it. I get angry FOMO when I’m just watching cricket. We have not traveled much in India for a little period. So the fact that we go there twice in the space of 12 months is exciting.
