Breastfeeding Awareness: The first week of August is being celebrated as World Breast Feeding Week. This time its theme is ‘Step up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support’. Breast feeding is important for the health of the baby as well as the health of the mother. However, during this time the mother has to take special care of some things. So that both he himself and his child do not have the problem of anemia.
During breast feeding, there is usually a deficiency of iron and calcium in the body of women. Due to which there is a lack of these nutrients in the child too. If not taken care of in time, both the mother and the baby can suffer from anemia. Gynecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon Dr. Sonia Chawla is telling about the things that lactating mothers should keep in mind in their diet.
Why does anemia happen?
If the nutrition of iron, calcium and vitamin D is not taken care of in the diet of women who are breast feeding, then they may have the problem of anemia. This is because calcium and iron are also secreted during breast feeding. That is, along with milk, these nutrients also come out of the body of women. In such a situation, if their own body does not get the right diet, then there is a problem of anemia.
bones can become weak
Doctor Sonia says that not only anemia, if a balanced and nutritious diet is not found during breast feeding, then the bones of women become weak. Because the calcium that comes out with milk is secreted from their bones. This is the reason why you must take calcium in your diet.
Why is Vitamin-D important?
Talking about the importance of vitamin-D for breast feeding women, Dr. Chawla says that calcium absorption in the body occurs only when vitamin-D is available in the body in the right amount. Otherwise, no matter how many calcium supplements you take, if there is a deficiency of vitamin-D, then the body will not be able to get the full benefit of this calcium.
What to eat breast feeding mothers?
Talking on a balanced diet for women who are breast feeding, Dr Chawla said that eat green leafy vegetables, take dry fruits like makhana, chuhara, dry fruits. Make food in an iron pan and eat it. Consume dairy products. Include things like lentils and porridge in your daily diet. Along with this, do not consume tea for half an hour after having a meal. By doing this, the absorption of nutrients and iron from the food decreases.
