Obesity is a growing global health problem. And its effects extend far beyond the risks of heart disease and diabetes. An area that we often don’t pay attention to. In other words, there is a strong link between obesity and joint health. Excess weight can put significant strain on your joints, especially the knees, hips and spine. This increases wear and tear on the joints and the risk of chronic joint diseases such as osteoarthritis.
The relationship between obesity and joint pain is as follows:
increased mechanical stress– With each additional pound of body weight, additional force is placed on weight-bearing joints, ultimately causing problems with walking, climbing stairs and much more.
completely swollenObesity leads to a decreased level of inflammation throughout the body. Adipose tissue produces inflammatory chemicals that can contribute to the breakdown of articular cartilage.
low mobilityObesity often limits physical activity, leading to muscle weakness, decreased bone density and joint stability, further aggravating joint problems.
Tips for maintaining joint health:
Maintain a Healthy Weight – When we spoke to Dr Apoorva Dua, Orthopedic Consultant, India Spinal Injury Center, Vasant Kunj, he said that losing even 5-10% of your body weight can significantly reduce the stress on your joints. and the progression of joint diseases can slow down.
stay active – Do low-impact exercises like swimming, walking or cycling to strengthen muscles and improve joint flexibility without increasing stress.
follow a balanced diet -Include anti-inflammatory foods like nuts, whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid processed and sugary foods which can increase inflammation.
Avoid standing or sitting for long periods– Alternate between sitting and standing to avoid unnecessary pressure and stiffness on the joints.
Choose supportive shoes- Wear comfortable, well-cushioned shoes to reduce the impact on your knees and hips.
Treatment options for obesity-related joint problems:
Nonsurgical treatment options include weight control, changing eating habits, regular exercise, and physical therapy. In cases where non-surgical methods are inadequate, surgical intervention may be necessary.
