July 5 – 9 AM Exchange Exemplar: Mental health expert examines the problems with the American system

It’s great that we’re talking about mental health more openly these days, less great that there’s a huge need for people to get services.

Thomas Insell knows a lot about the US mental health system, having worked in it, running the National Institute of Mental Health, and being hired by the current Governor of California as mental health czar.

Insel cataloged the problems of the system in his book Healing: Our Journey from Mental Illness to Mental Health. It points out the deficiencies of the system and what it would take to cover them.

The interview is from early 2022, and part of the reason for republishing it is to highlight the arrival of the 988 mental health crisis line (think 911 for mental health) on July 16.
