Kelowna man hopes his run is crazy enough to get people talking about mental health – Lake Country Calendar

A Kelowna man is using a winter 100K run to raise money to get people talking about mental illness.

On Saturday, December 10, Lucas Cullen will prepare to begin his 100km adventure along the Rail Trail from Kelowna to Vernon and back.

The idea for the project came during a period of obscurity, Cullen said.

He said he was at his lowest point and was contemplating taking his own life before he could rise again, with the help of his family and friends.

Cullen said that the race is a metaphor for mental illness. He will start the race at 11:11 pm, running in harsh winter conditions, through dusk and dawn. He will run periods alone and with others while surrounded by friends and family.

The Stober Foundation has agreed to match all donations made to Cullen’s chosen charity, Kids Help Phone.

Cullen has a goal of raising $10,000 for the Helpline, but said his main goal is to catalyze conversations about mental illness with his outrageous expedition.

He hopes the winter 100K race will be crazy enough to get people talking about mental health.
