In today’s era of social media, conveying information to people is not a big deal. In such a situation, every kind of information reaches people through one or the other medium. You too must have read or heard somewhere about such a disease, for the treatment of which the patient needs injections worth crores of rupees. Actually or disease is spinal muscular atrophy.
Actually it is a group of genetic diseases in which a person suffers from damage to the nerves from the spinal cord to the brain. This disease is seen in different forms in patients. Tell you in detail what is this spinal muscular atrophy?
What is spinal muscular atrophy?
Spinal muscular atrophy is a group of genetic diseases that cause problems with muscle control. In this disease, the cells of the nervous system of the brain and the cells of the spinal cord get damaged, due to which the muscles of the patient become weak. The person suffering from this can neither stand on his own strength nor is able to receive signals from his brain.
The word atrophy is a medical term which means small. With spinal muscular atrophy, some muscles become smaller and weaker from lack of use. Here we are going to tell you about the causes, symptoms and treatment of spinal muscular atrophy. It mostly affects infants and children, but can also develop in adults. Symptoms and prognosis vary depending on the type of disease.
The treatment of this disease depends on its type and symptoms. Many people with SMA move with the help of physical and occupational therapy and assistive devices, such as orthopedic braces, crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs. The disease can be treated with gene replacement and disease-modifying therapies.
Symptoms of spinal muscular atrophy
Due to the presence of this disease in most patients, obvious symptoms start appearing from the time of birth. But there are some patients in whom the symptoms of this disease start appearing shortly after birth. These symptoms are seen in patients with spinal muscular atrophy.
- difficulty breathing
- trouble swallowing
- trouble standing and walking
- Changes in the shape of the spine and chest due to muscle weakness
- loss of muscle tone
- problems controlling head movements
- It is a rare and serious disease and its symptoms tend to get worse over time.
How is spinal muscular atrophy diagnosed?
Some SMA symptoms resemble symptoms that result from neuromuscular disorders such as muscular dystrophy. To find the cause of the symptoms, the doctor will do a physical exam and ask about the patient’s medical history. Your doctor may recommend one or more of the following tests to diagnose SMA:
Blood Test: An enzyme and protein blood test can check for high levels of creatine kinase. Deteriorating muscles release this enzyme into the bloodstream.
Genetic test: This blood test identifies problems with the SMN1 gene. As a diagnostic tool, a genetic test is 95% effective at finding the altered SMN1 gene. Some states test for SMA as part of routine newborn screening.
Nerve conduction test: An electromyogram (EMG) measures signals from the muscles and nerves of the nerves.
Muscle biopsy: Rarely, the doctor may perform a biopsy of the patient’s muscle. In this procedure, a small amount of muscle tissue is removed and sent to a laboratory for examination.
due to spinal muscular atrophy
In most people, this problem is caused by genetic disorders and dysfunction of motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain stem. When these motor neurons stop working because of gene changes, muscle control is lost. These are known as Survival Motor Neuron 1 (SMN1) and SMN2. Motor neurons are nerve cells that control neural movement. The SMN1 and SMN2 genes carry instructions for making proteins that are thought to be essential for motor neurons to function. It can also happen due to genetic problems. If this defect is in either the mother or the father, then the child born out of it gets this disease.
What are the types of spinal muscular atrophy?
There are four primary types of SMA:
Type 1 (severe): About 60% of people with SMA have type 1, also known as Werdnig-Hoffmann disease.
Type 2 (Intermediate): Symptoms of type 2 SMA (also known as Dubovitz’s disease) appear when a child is between six months and 18 months old.
Type 3 (Mild): Symptoms of type 3 SMA (also called Kugelbert-Welander or juvenile-onset SMA) appear after the first 18 months of a child’s life.
Type 4 (more common in adults): A rare form of SMA is seen in adults up to the age of 30.
