Lady Gaga highlights mental health during recent performance at Wrigley Field

CHICAGO (CBS) – Mother Monster roared into the Windy City dazzling a crowd of thousands.

Last Monday night, Lady Gaga performed in Chicago, bringing her hit music and a powerful message about mental health.

The singer and actor recently performed “Hold My Hand” at Wrigley Field. As he wowed the crowd with his new songs, non-stop energy and mega hits, he shared many moments where he empowered people, especially young people, when it came to his mental health.

That is the goal of the Born This Way Foundation. The singer started the foundation a decade ago with her mother.

The executive director of the Born This Way Foundation, Maya Smith, says that Lady Gaga started the organization for very personal reasons.

“Sometimes when you’re young and you’re different, you’re treated like a liability, rather than an asset, and so he put up with a lot of pettiness and cruelty,” Smith said. “It was clear to her from a very young age that if she wanted to survive his life, she would dedicate her time, her treasure and his talents to make sure other young people not only survived but could thrive.”

So far this year, Lady Gaga’s organization has donated more than $1 million in grants to 22 organizations nationwide, including two in Chicago.

As young people prepare to return to school, the foundation is also doing its please stay campaign. These are images with inspirational messages, on the spot, at L stops and bus stops throughout the city, to remind people that in difficult times, there is hope and support for them.

based in Chicago Brands Conagra has supported the Born This Way Foundation in various ways, including through donations to support the organization’s efforts for the past two years.
