Lumpy skin disease: Another viral infection has been causing quite a stir in India over the past few weeks but this time it is affecting cattle. Lumpy skin disease is an infectious viral disease that usually manifests as an epizootic outbreak in cattle. The disease is distinguished by the formation of nodules in the skin, which spread throughout the body of the animal. Thousands of cattle have died due to this disease in more than eight states of India – Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Rajasthan. Lumpy skin disease prevention
The Government of India is taking concrete steps to protect the animals and prevent the spread of the disease. The Chief Minister’s Official (CMO) has said in a formal statement that the Chief Minister has ordered the launch of a disease awareness campaign and has also ordered citizens to be on site to offer help in their allotted areas. To prevent this disease, strict measures are being implemented and security measures are being taken so that the disease does not spread to the neighboring states.
Meanwhile, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Secretary Jatindra Nath Swain said states are currently using ‘goat pox’ vaccine to control Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle. According to reports, the goat pox vaccine is 100 percent effective, and 1.5 crore doses have already been administered in the affected states.
Can lumpy skin disease affect humans?
The answer is no. The disease cannot be transmitted to humans, nor can it be transmitted from infected animals to humans. The disease is not zoonotic which means it cannot affect humans. Doctors have also said that consuming beef and other dairy products poses no risk.
