Madhya Pradesh: NHRC to review condition of Gwalior mental hospital | Bhopal News – Times of India

BHOPAL: An Indian delegation from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), led by its chairman, Justice Arun Mishra, has scheduled a visit to Gwalior Mansik Arogyashala in madhya pradesh on Tuesday to inspect and learn firsthand its current status.
The commission would also formulate a long-term plan for the efficient operation of Mansik Arogyashala. The visit will be followed by a workshop to sensitize all stakeholders on the various challenges related to mental health on Wednesday in Gwalior.
In response to a PIL, the Supreme Court in the order of November 11, 1997 ordered the district judge to continue to control the psychiatric hospitals in Gwalior, Agra and Ranchi, and to give the necessary instructions from time to time by submitting periodic reports to the NHRC, with a copy to the superior court.
Consequently, the President of the NHRC requested the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh to advise the District Judges of Gwalior to supervise the operation of psychiatric hospitals and submit quarterly reports to the NHRC with a copy to the Supreme Court.
A similar DO letter from the NHRC Deputy Registrar was issued to the Gwalior District Judge, requesting that the report for the quarter ending March 31, 2022 be submitted to the Commission no later than April 20, 2022. 2022.
An inspection report received from the Gwalior District Judge in this regard highlighted deficiencies and difficulties in the operation of the hospital, including lack of funds, shortage of staff, poor infrastructure, poor accommodation, difficulty in locating relatives of cured patients and difficulty in repatriation.
The delegation will also be comprised of NHRC members: Justice MM Kumar and Rajiv Jain, Secretary General Mr. Devendra Kumar Singh, and Deputy Secretary Harish Chandra Chaudhary.
The awareness workshop on Day 2 will include the participation of, among others, Mohammed Suleman, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Health Education; Prateek Hajela, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Social Welfare and Disability Welfare, Government of Madhya Pradesh; Prof. (Dr.) Atul Goel, Director General, Health Services, Government of India; Prof. (Dr.) Pratima Murthy, Director, NIMHANS; the divisional commissioner, Gwalior; chief district judge, gwalior and director, Gwalior Mansik Arogyashala.
