Man, 52, experiences two months of hell due to B12 deficiency

His family took him to the emergency department because he had not been eating properly for three days and had started vomiting.

“The patient had a normal state of health until two months before his visit, when he began to develop changes in his behavior,” explains the case study.

“According to his wife, the patient became more aggressive, had reduced sleep, stopped going to work and withdrew. He also had hallucinations and episodes of short-term memory loss.

“The previous symptoms were accompanied by generalized body weakness, mainly in the lower limbs.

“The weakness of the body was associated with pain; the patient was left in a wheelchair.

“Over the past two months, the patient has seen many doctors, but no definitive diagnosis has been made.”

He underwent a neurological examination, during which he was “unable to support himself while standing”, however this yielded no responses.

Later, laboratory tests revealed that he had “undetectable levels” of vitamin B12 in his blood.

The study concludes: “Two months after starting treatment, the patient returned for control.

“There was a major change in his behavior. He was fully oriented and had significant memory improvements, but he did not remember when he entered.

“Five months after starting treatment, the patient returned for a second follow-up and had marked improvements in gait, muscle strength, and cognitive function.”

Six months after starting treatment, the patient was able to walk on his own and drive his car.
