DETROIT – The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office found that goalkeeper burks he received 19 of the 38 shots he directed detroit police.
Authorities say there were two shots to the head, six to the chest, five to the left arm and more.
On October 2, around 5 am, Burks, 20, has murdered after being shot by Detroit police. Burks’ family called police for a mental health checkup as the 20-year-old had a pocket knife and they didn’t want him in the house with it.
Detroit police say that when they arrived at the scene, Burks did not drop the knife. Lawyer Geoffrey Fieger he said police knew of Burks and his mental health issues and that they did not need to open fire on him.
“This is the definition of excessive force. There was absolutely no need to use deadly force in this connotation,” Fieger said. “There must have been 1,000 things they could do other than shoot him.”
Burks’ family filed a $50 million lawsuit against Detroit police and the five unidentified officers who were called to the scene on October 2.
In addition to the $50 million, the lawsuit calls for changes to the way Detroit handles people experiencing a mental health crisis.
