Mental health centre hobbled by lack of infrastructure: SHRC

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has pointed to the lack of infrastructure as the biggest challenge faced by patients and employees of the Mental Health Center (MHC), Peroorkada.

Commission chairman Antony Dominic, who inspected the mental health facility, found that it was plagued with a number of problems. It did not have the facilities required by the 2017 Mental Health Act. As a result, it was unable to provide quality treatment to the hundreds of patients. The number of employees was not proportional to the number of patients. The employees were appointed according to the previous staff setting. The old structures on the hospital premises were not regularly maintained.

The number of security personnel was also inadequate. There were no facilities to supervise and ensure the safety of patients who needed to be confined.

The commission that made the visit following complaints of the difficulties experienced by the patients will submit a detailed address to the government.

Commission Secretary SH Jayakesan, Registrar GS Asha, Commission Investigation Wing Police Superintendent S. Devamanohar and Police Deputy Superintendent SS Suresh Kumar accompanied Mr. Dominic.
