Mental Health Commission details non-compliance at UHW’s Department of Psychiatry | WLRFM.com

An inspection report published by the Mental Health Commission reported three non-compliances at the Department of Psychiatry at University Hospital Waterford.

The inspection was carried out over four days in September last year, from September 19 to 22, 2023.

Here are some of the report’s findings:

The Mental Health Commission’s report was made after four days of inspections between September 19 and 22, 2023.

An adequate routine maintenance program had not been implemented and records, including clinical records, were also considered to be maintained in poor condition.

Adequate arrangements were not in place for residents to have access to all general health services and for referral to all other health services as necessary.

The inspection also found that not all minor complaints were registered at the authorized center.

The clinical record of a child who had been admitted to the authorized center was reviewed.

While provisions were in place to ensure the safety of the child, no age-appropriate facilities were provided as the child was admitted to an approved facility for adults.

The furniture was found to be inadequate and did not support the independence and comfort of the residents, while two sets of fire doors were found to not function properly when closed.

The approved facility also did not comply with the Physical Restraint Code of Practice and the Seclusion Standard.
