Mental Stress May Result in Heart Attack, Stroke, Confirms New Study

Recent research has found that emotional stress can damage arteries and increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. The study also revealed how emotional stress affects our body’s circulatory system.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, mental rather than physical stress is more responsible for seizures, strokes, or cardiovascular disease among people with less healthy hearts. During the study, the effect of physical and mental stress was evaluated in more than 900 people with heart disease.

Mental stress increased the risk of myocardial ischemia in these patients because their heart arteries did not receive enough oxygen and they were at increased risk of stroke.

In a study of more than 24,000 people in 52 countries, those with high levels of mental stress were found to have more than twice the risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

According to cardiologist Dr. Michael Osborne, the reason for mental stress can be job loss, anxiety, or severe depression leading to heart disease. When you are continually subjected to these emotional and psychological pressures, you are likely to enter a state where the fear center in your brain reacts by releasing hormones.

This increases fat, blood pressure, and insulin resistance in the body. When this happens repeatedly, the arteries of the heart begin to swell. This increases blood clotting, eventually resulting in a heart attack or stroke.

Things to take care of:

According to the researchers, stress reduction programs can also be beneficial. These include yoga, meditation, and tai chi that activate the parasympathetic nervous system in your body. Regular workouts also relieve stress.

Dr. Osborne explains that getting enough sleep reduces the risk of heart disease and you need to establish a sleep pattern and wake up. Avoid having your smartphone or computer nearby while you sleep. The blue light they emit can be harmful.
