Monkeypox outbreaks so far

The WHO says the first major monkeypox outbreak was suspected in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1996-97 and adds that there was a low case fatality rate and a high attack rate.

In 2003, a monkeypox outbreak occurred in the United States and was the first reported case outside Africa. “In 2003, forty-seven confirmed and probable cases of monkeypox were reported from six states—Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. All people infected with monkeypox in this outbreak became ill after coming into contact with pet prairie dogs.” Pets became infected after being kept near small mammals imported from Ghana. This was the first time human monkeypox was reported outside Africa,” the US CDC has said.

“… a consignment of animals from Ghana, imported into Texas in April 2003, introduced monkeypox virus to the United States,” adds the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

After 40 years, Nigeria saw the largest documented outbreak in 2017.

Later, monkeypox was carried to Israel in September 2018, the United Kingdom in September 2018 and in December 2019 and Singapore in May 2019 by travelers from Nigeria who became ill with monkeypox upon arrival.

Monkeypox: How is it transmitted?

The virus reaches people through cuts in the skin, respiratory tract, or mucous membranes around the eyes or in the nose and mouth from infected animals.

Person-to-person transmission can occur, and is believed to occur primarily through virus-containing droplets. But transmission can also occur by direct contact with an infected person’s wounds or bodily fluids, or indirect contact through contaminated clothing or linens.

Monkeypox virus: What are the risk factors?

The WHO states that the case fatality ratio of monkeypox in the general population varies between 0 and 11%, and is higher in young children.

Although monkeypox is said to be a self-limiting disease, the severity of the infection depends on several factors such as age, exposure, health status of the patient and the nature of complications.

Young children are most vulnerable to this viral attack.

Consumption of insufficiently cooked meat and other animal products from infected animals is a potential risk factor.

Several research studies have found that potential risk factors for monkeypox within a household are sleeping in the same room or bed, or using the same plates or cups.

Treatment of monkeypox-

Although a person affected by this disease usually recovers in a week, but in some people this disease can be very serious and even fatal. According to the World Health Organization, there is currently no exact treatment for monkeypox. When infected with this disease, the patient is treated to reduce the symptoms.

Keeping the infected person in isolation reduces the risk of spreading it to other people. Apart from this, it is also advised to use face mask in public places, take care of cleanliness.
