NIMHANS launches brain health initiative with Niti Ayog

Minister of Health and Medical Education K. Sudhakar on Tuesday launched the Karnataka Brain Health Initiative, a first-of-its-kind program in the country, conducted by NIMHANS in partnership with Niti Ayog.

At the virtual launch show here, the Minister said that to begin with, the initiative was being rolled out in Bengaluru, Kolar and Chickballapur districts on a trial basis. Under this program, doctors would be trained in the detection and treatment of mental health patients.

“Since the start of the pandemic, the Government, in partnership with NIMHANS, has been helping people cope with mental health issues. We have done thousands of mental health counseling sessions with people infected with COVID-19 and their families,” he said.

“Since mental health influences the physical health and general well-being of the individual, we need to make sure that everyone is aware of mental health issues and NIMHANS is doing a very good job of bringing mental health care to communities. persons. Under this brain health initiative, even general practitioners will be trained in mental health,” said the Minister.

Even newborns needed to be screened for mental health problems. Due to various socioeconomic, genetic and family factors, many people suffer from mental health problems. This would affect their day to day life and their quality of life. Therefore, more doctors need to be trained in mental health, said the Minister.
