No BF.7 Omicron Variant Case Spotted in South Indian State of Tamil Nadu

A new highly transmissible BF.7 variant from Omicron has started to spread in many countries. However, the genome sequencing report of the six international passengers who had landed at various international airports in Tamil Nadu (TN) has not reported any Omicron BF.7 variants.

Omicron Registered Cases in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said the two passengers returning to China, who tested positive for COVID-19, were affected by BA5.2. A passenger from Muscat, Kuwait and Bangkok was identified with Omicron’s BA.2 strain. Another passenger, who arrived from Muscat and tested positive, has Omicron’s XBB.1 strain.

The state has already tested 93 samples so far and of these, 98 percent had tested BA.2 or BA.5, while the remaining two percent tested the Delta variant.

The Health Minister also said that all the patients are recovering well after being in home isolation.

Since the Omicron BF.7 strain is prominent in countries like China, Japan, and Hong Kong, the central government made random testing at international airports mandatory.
