Nothing Bundt Cakes, a new bakery in Okemos, held a fundraiser at its ribbon cutting on Friday, donating 20% of sales to the Gregory H. Montgomery Jr. Foundation for Ultimate Growth.
The foundation was started after former Michigan State University and NFL punter Greg Montgomery lost his battle with mental illness in 2020. They strive to provide mental health resources for all student-athletes from MSU.
“Greg was a friend at school…he really was someone I thought highly of,” Okemos Nothing Bundt Cakes owner Wendy Kinney said. “I kept in touch with him through his battle with bipolar disorder because it is something that is very close to my heart.”
The foundation also developed a curriculum for coaches to discuss mental wellness with athletes called SCORE.
“That’s ‘Strive, Connect, Surpass, Recharge and Evolve,’” said Gregory H. Montgomery Jr. Foundation for Maximum Growth President and Montgomery’s sister, Margot Montgomery Moran.
Moran’s family also has close ties to MSU.
“My brothers and dad played for Michigan State Spartans football,” Moran.
Montgomery was an advocate for mental health from the moment he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
“He really wanted to spread (awareness) … his mission was cut short,” Moran said. “It is our duty as a family to carry on, and his founding motto is ‘He lives through lives saved.’”
The Kappa Kappa Gamma chapter at Michigan State also supports Ultimate Growth as part of its philanthropy and was present at the event. One of his national philanthropies is based on mental health awareness.
“It’s an amazing opportunity to raise awareness … so that we can support not only the girls within our sorority but other people as well,” said Bryce Gordon, president of philanthropy for Kappa Kappa Gamma. “You are heard, you are not alone.”
