“People don’t know what players are going through” – Chelsea star reveals he ‘suffered with anxiety’ last season as he opens up on mental health challenge

chelsea Star Trevoh Chalobah recently revealed that he suffered from anxiety last season after suffering from mental health issues.

The mental health of athletes is an issue that is often overlooked. Footballers, especially Premier League stars, are some of the biggest stars in the world.

However, all the glitz and fame comes at a cost that often takes a toll on the mental health of athletes.

Chalobah suffered from its own problems last season. The pressure of playing in front of a massive crown for the then-champions of europe affected the player. He recently spoke about the residency podcast (via football.london):

“Football is like that, mentally. People don’t know what the players are going through. We’re human, people think we’re super human and we’re not affected by what people say, what people do.”

He further added:

“Playing for Chelsea last season, at the start of the season, I suffered from anxiety. Playing for a big club, in front of 40,000 [supporters] weekly. Obviously, I was used to going on loan, but it’s different when you play for your childhood club in a great team that won the Champions League the year before.”

Chalobah further added that he has dealt with his anxiety issues this season:

“I have treated [now]. This was the beginning of last season. The first few weeks were tough, but I managed to pull through. I was just talking to my family, actually just talking to people. My family; We are very close, we are always talking”.
