Police reports lodged against fitness studios that allegedly closed down overnight

SINGAPORE – Several police reports have been filed against two gyms whose outlets allegedly closed overnight.

Kyklos Studio and its affiliated brand X Fitness are run by 31-year-old Mr. Atlas Ang. His websites and social media pages were suddenly blocked or removed earlier this week, and Mr. Ang has become unreachable.

Attempts by the Straits Times to contact him for comment have also been unsuccessful.

Several users, who told ST that they bought packages ranging from $200 to $600, are worried that they won’t be able to get their money back.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, several said they accepted the packages because the studios looked correct and they had outlets in malls.

A woman in her 20s spent about $300 in August on a 20-class package after attending a trial class.

“I have signed packages with other studios and this has never happened before,” he added. “I’m really upset that they didn’t even announce anything on their social media and just disappeared.”

She said she had yet to attend a single class and learned of the latest turn of events from a friend on Tuesday. Her friend tried to attend a class she had signed up for, but she discovered that the studio was closed.

The studio’s freelance instructors have also been unable to contact Mr. Ang.

The studios hold their classes at the GR.iD shopping center in Dhoby Ghaut and Tekka Place in Serangoon.

A Tekka Place spokesperson said the gym is not a tenant, but would reserve event spaces for its activities.

The X Fitness website, which is no longer available, also lists classes at the Hougang Sports Hall.

One woman, who wanted to be known only as LT, said she thinks she is one of the last people to have seen the studios in operation.

She said that she had booked a class at 11:15 am with her friends at Kyklos Studio on GR.iD on September 11th. As they walked to the studio around 10:55 a.m. that day, they heard screams coming from inside.

Upon entering, they saw two men. LT said that one of the men “had a really angry face,” and the other told them to wait outside the studio for a while.

A few minutes later, he was surprised to receive a notification on his phone that the class had been cancelled. The staff also closed the studio doors.

“With that, we were stranded outside the studio with no idea what had just happened,” he said. “We decided to just book for another nearby spin class and left shortly after.”

Police confirmed that several reports had been filed and are investigating the matter.

Business records show that Mr. Ang is the director of four companies dealing with training courses for sports and games. They are ACSG 1, Kyklos, X+ and XSC 1.

ACSG 1 and Kyklos appear to be registered to their home address in Punggol, while XSC 1 is registered to the studio address in Dhoby Ghaut.

X+ is registered to an address near Chinatown.

He is also listed as the director of Hong Creatives, a publicity outfit, where a man who answered the phone only said that Ang would “be back soon”.
