Port Moody police praise man for de-escalating mental health crisis, saving child

Port Moody, BC –

Port Moody Police congratulate a Good Samaritan whose quick and bold actions may have saved several lives.

Andrew Logan says he was driving west in the 2200 block of St. Johns Street Monday night when he noticed a strange situation ahead of him.

“I saw a man standing in traffic in the center lane,” Logan said.

He decided to stop to check on the man and then made a shocking discovery.

“The girl turns her head to me and that’s when I realized she was carrying a child, so I asked her, ‘Why are you standing in the middle of the street with a child in your arms?'” Logan said. .

“He starts talking to me, but it doesn’t make sense. His words are not linked together with any sensible meaning.”

Logan says he drove his truck across the road to avoid passing traffic, before proceeding to convince the man to put his daughter back in his car.

“While I was talking to him, he kept saying that he needed his daughter to be safe, he kept saying that, before finally putting her in her car seat,” Logan said.

He says he later discovered that the man also had a young son sitting in the front passenger seat.

While the two boys remained safely in the vehicle, Logan says he had to continually restrain the man from getting back into traffic.

“I didn’t want to rough it up, but at the same time I knew traffic was coming and people couldn’t see it,” Logan said.

Port Moody Police arrived on the scene moments later, took the children to safety and took the father into custody under the Mental Health Act.

“We congratulate Andrew for his actions that day,” said Const. Sam Zacharias, spokesman for the Port Moody Police Department.

“It certainly went beyond what we would expect from the public. He put himself in harm’s way to protect this little boy.”

Logan is quick to shoot down the idea that he is a hero, saying that he was simply doing his duty as a fellow citizen.

“There are a lot of people who travel from one place to another without stopping to find out what’s going on, so if it’s not me, then who?” Logan said.

“We all need help sometimes and if we remember to be there for each other when we need it, things will go much better and everyone will have a better life.”
