According to American researchers, pregnant women who come in contact with many artificial lights for three hours before sleeping, have a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes. Dr. Minji Kim, lead author of the study and a neurologist at Northwestern University, said that light exposure may prove to be a risk factor for gestational diabetes in pregnant women.

Experts believe that exposure to artificial lights at night reduces the level of a hormone called melatonin in such women. Not only this, the internal clock of the body is also disrupted. This has an effect on the level of blood sugar. Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that develops in women during pregnancy and usually disappears after childbirth.

According to the report of The Sun, according to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, this condition affects at least 4 to 5 women out of 100 women during pregnancy. If this condition is not well controlled, it can also cause serious health problems for the baby, including death. 

Researchers tracked data from more than 700 women to see how exposure to artificial light before bed affected their health. In this research, it was found that gestational diabetes developed in some women. Women who were exposed to bright light from TVs, computers and smartphones and artificial lights in their homes were 5 times more likely to develop this problem.

Dr. Minji has appealed to pregnant women not to come in contact with any bright light at least 3 hours before sleeping. He also said that women should minimize the use of computers or smartphones during pregnancy. Other risk factors for gestational diabetes include being overweight, being less active, having polycystic ovary syndrome, and having a family member with diabetes.
