Prince George pro-wrestling event to raise mental health awareness

The event is in memory of former Northern British Columbia teen wrestler ‘Prime Time’ Franky Styles.

A live professional wrestling event taking place in Prince George will not only be an action-packed evening, it will raise awareness and funds for the Northern British Columbia Crisis Center.

Growing up a wrestling fan, Prince George’s Paul English was one of the first to sign up at age 15 when he learned that a professional wrestling training camp was being established in Prince George in 2000.

He was a natural on the ropes, adopted the ring name “Prime Time” Franky Styles, and had his hand raised for the Maniac Wrestling Alliance Ironman Tournament in 2001.

Over the next several years, he delighted audiences and won championships.

His trainer, Stuart Brown, was overwhelmed to learn that during the pandemic hiatus, the former teen sensation from northern British Columbia had taken his own life.

Brown was devastated that a Northerner who had been so colorful and employed so many had become desperate and died in May 2021 at just 35 years old.

Still mourning the deaths of his friends, Brown wanted to do more than just issue ‘hopes and prayers’ that something like this doesn’t happen again.

Instead, he assembled a troop of wrestlers, including some of the wrestlers who traveled with English on his last tour, both to celebrate his life and love of professional wrestling and to raise awareness and support for community resources around the world. Prince George.

The doubleheader event on October 14 and 15 at House of Ancestors features Prince George’s Brice Sova (aka The Slammer), The Mauler and former Kitimat resident Michael May.

What are anorexia and bulimia? Why is the risk increased in adolescents?

They are joined by ‘Mr. Beefy Goodness’ Vance Nevada, ‘Cheetahbear’ Jude Dawkings, Bobby Sharp and others for a two-night tournament, renamed the “Prime Time” tournament after the Englishman.

Also appearing at the event are two of Canada’s two female wrestlers: Vernon, Jade from BC, will take on ‘Relentless’ Rylie Rose from Redwater, Alberta.

Advance tickets are available at the Scrapbook Zone at 3899 18th Avenue and will also be available at the door with net proceeds from the event going to the Crisis, Prevention, Intervention and Information Center.

Anyone who feels they need help can contact the Northern BC Crisis Line at 1-888-562-1214 at any time for a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space to talk about any issues that concern them.
