SUMTER, SC (WIS) – An employee at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital has died after an altercation with a patient in late May.
Sumter County Coroner Robert Baker Jr. confirmed to WIS that Kevin Robinson, 40, died on May 31, 2022 after an altercation with a patient days earlier.
Baker said that on May 27, a patient admitted to the hospital with “mental and emotional” problems punched Robinson in the groin.
Baker said Robinson collapsed, went into cardiac arrest and was hospitalized in the ICU until he died. He said an autopsy was performed on June 3, but results are pending.
The coroner confirmed that Robinson was an employee of the hospital.
The Sumter Police Department sent out a statement that said:
A patient, who injured hospital staff when they tried to stop her from leaving, is facing charges.
Imani Cox, 27, of Crowndale Drive, who was admitted to Prisma Health Tuomey for a court-ordered evaluation, was trying to leave the facility on May 27 when hospital security and staff members tried to stop her.
Information gathered in the investigation indicates that Cox was aggressive and began fighting with the employees, hitting at least two of them.
A mental health technician, Kevin Robinson, 40, of Washington Street, was struck in the groin area before becoming ill and unresponsive.
Robinson died a few days later. An investigation continues. Results of an autopsy performed Friday are pending. Cox was taken to a Columbia area hospital, where she received treatment.
After her release, Cox was charged with second-degree assault and battery and booked into the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
The detention center confirmed that Cox is still in their custody. Sumter County court records show she was given $7,500 bond but has not posted it.
WIS contacted Prisma Health for a statement, they said of Robinson’s death,
“He worked for us for 11 years and his team members loved him very much.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of our team members and to our family at Tuomey Hospital who share in their loss.”
Attempts to contact Robinson’s family were unsuccessful.
Jean Meyer-Prisma Health, senior vice president of acute care operations, released a statement about the incident that left Robinson dead:
