The Kozhikode district panchayat is ready to launch ‘Pularkalam’, a project to ensure the physical and mental health of students in classes 8 to 12.
According to sources, the four-year plan will encourage teenagers to practice yoga, meditation, aerobics or ride a bike early in the morning every day to stay mentally and physically fit. It is expected to be released in November.
NM Vimala, chairman of the education standing committee, said 75 schools, 45 in the government sector and 35 in the assisted sector, would be covered in the first phase. At first the students of Class VIII would participate. Fifty students from each school would be chosen in a year. Workshops would be held for students and teachers who will be part of the program.
V. Praveen Kumar, coordinator of the project, said that the students will be asked to get up around 5:30 am every day. Then they would have to do yoga, meditation, or any physical exercise like riding a bike for an hour. It would be necessary to upload a photo of the exercise in a WhatsApp group.
Review meetings would be held every month to review the progress of the scheme and the physical and mental health along with the educational standards of the participants would be monitored every six months. The students would have to go through constant training over the course of the project’s tenure, the sources added.
